I always thought being a third wheel was a bad thing? I always understood it to mean being totally out of place.

I guess it is their attempt at humor but it isn't very funny.
Sorry...It was not meant to be funny nor was it not to be taken in a negative way. 3rd wheel in a sense would be all of us. Just a metaphor.
While we sometime discuss "family structure", the out of place-ness of a 2nd wife depends entirely on this. A bicycle / motorcycle doesn't need a third wheel. It can balance & perform very well as is. A tricycle / ATV would be completely grounded without it. Most vehicles have 4 wheels: different structure, different function. My personal vehicle has 10, but my family structure feels like a unicycle half the time.
I guess there's a part of this conversation I missed. Why did "Sorry" (an expression of grief, regret, or apology) lead to a discussion on 3rd Wheels?
